Book and Lyrics: Creating Musical Theatre

In this fast-paced 3-hour session, award-winning lyricist and librettist* Molly Reisman will focus on the creative development of New Work for Musical Theatre. Molly will share her journey and tackle practical questions including: Finding and working with the right collaborator, How to advocate with producers, and How to negotiate your way through the business maze of Musical Theatre. In addition, Molly will lead two activities focusing on lyric writing and collaboration.

Class session is limited to 10. There is no charge to artists emerging and established for this special opportunity.

MOLLY REISMAN (she/her) is an award-winning Canadian lyricist and librettist who is passionate about telling engaging stories marrying science and imagination. Molly’s work has been performed across Canada, The United States and Taiwan, and has been translated into three languages. Her all ages musical Keaton and The Whale received the 2019 Eric H. Weinberger Award for Emerging Librettist and the 2019 Fingerlakes PiTCH Festival Artist in Residence, as well as being shortlisted for the 2020 Tom Hendry Musical Award. Molly has had works commissioned by Pepperdine University (Electric Circus) as well as La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club (TedQuest 2018; The Three Dolls 2019), where one of her pieces was performed during La MaMa’s 2018 Tony Award winning season. Molly’s works have won the 2020 New Voices Project Award from New Musicals Inc and Walt Disney Imagineering as well as Best Musical at the Atlantic Fringe Festival. She has served as Artist in Residence for The Catwalk Art Institute and Michigan State University. Molly holds a B.F.A in acting from Ryerson University and an M.F.A from NYU Tisch’s Graduate Musical Theater Writing Program. Molly teaches musical theatre writing and devised theatre with The Ottawa Children’s Theatre, TheatreworksUSA and Tectonic Theater Project.
