Artist Talk: Radical Friends
Join FFF Playwright in Residence Michaela Jeffery and her long-term artistic collaborator dramaturg/director Laurel Green to explore radical friendship, lateral-mentorship, and how to advocate for your work in the face of crisis. They will share their past experience navigating the cancellation of a world premiere production using creative, audacious, collaborative problem-solving to champion a play they believed in. This talk invites you to consider the relationships and spaces where you feel the most empowered — where you can be brave — now and in the future.

Michaela (she/her) is an Alberta based playwright and graduate of The National Theatre School of Canada. Recent writing credits include: Incendiary (a radio drama), The Extractionist, commissioned by Vertigo Theatre (Calgary, AB), text creation for Persephone Bound, Imago Theatre (Montreal, QC), WROL (Without Rule of Law), Persephone Theatre (Saskatoon, SK) – nominated for a 2020 SATAward for Outstanding Original Script, Wolf on the Ringstrasse, Spirit Fire Theatre (Calgary, AB), The Listening Room, Cardiac Theatre (Edmonton, AB) in conjunction with The Azimuth Theatre & Downstage Performance Society; The Listening Room received its American premiere Off Broadway in November 2019 with Nylon Fusion Theatre Co. (NYC, NY). Always, The Cultch Emerging Artist Festival (Vancouver, BC), Hardscrabble Road, GODHEAD, (Shortlist, Headwaters New Play Festival – Creede, Colorado; The Sunset Theatre, Wells, BC), Sundogs (Holding Hollow Productions; Edmonton International Fringe Festival), and others. Her short play Expanding Concepts of Dislocated Space (And Associated Boundaries) was published in the July 2018 edition of Bare Fiction Magazine (UK Publication).
Michaela was a recent finalist in the Alberta Playwrights Network 2019 Alberta Playwriting Competition with her play WROL (Without Rule of Law) as well as a finalist for the Playwrights Guild of Canada’s RBC Emerging Playwright Award for her play The Listening Room and recipient of the national Enbridge Playwrights Award (Emerging Category) for her developing play, Going West. Dramaturg/Director: Laurel Green (she/her) is a dramaturg and director whose practice is based in the creation, development, and production of new work. She directed the world premiere of WROL (Without Rule of Law) at Persephone Theatre, and has supported the play for the past five years through development, production, and to publication this year. Laurel was the Festival Producer for One Yellow Rabbit’s High Performance Rodeo, Calgary’s International Festival of the Arts, and was Artistic Associate for seven seasons at Alberta Theatre Projects, launching a National Playwrights Unit and contributing to the world premiere of over a dozen new plays. Her current projects include: Trophy’s Remixed, a hybrid App-alogorithm and DIY-installation at-home change listening party (playing at undercurrents this March) and asses.masses, a solo video game performance for multiple players about sharing the load of revolution (FIBA, Buenos Aires). She is a performance researcher with the University of Victoria, and part of The International Dramaturgy Lab.
